Demand Tip – Overexplain The SH** Out of Everything

How To Be a Scumbag

Hey kids!

Thanks again for all the comments and reading. The site is really coming to life. Exactly what I thought was needed – a good, healthy discussion about what’s going on at Demand without having to worry about getting fired for saying the wrong thing or being attacked by the Demand Zombies.

Loved the long comment about the two lawyers fighting in the forums. Exactly – if you’re such a big time lawyer, what the hell are you doing writing for Demand? You really need that extra $15? Isn’t that what you guys charge someone for a paperclip?

Speaking of lawyers, haven’t heard from any yet. I expect at some time they’ll probably make me pull the DS banner, under some kind of “copyright infringement” hoohaw. And that’s fine. I need to get all UXI on this shiznit anyway. My original idea for the site was to have a blog and then an ongoing phpbb forum – hey, kind of just like the Demand forums, but with 99.99% less DS zombies. What do you guys think?

Oh yeah – and you can CONTACT me by clicking on that link I just made or the CONTACT menu up there on the left. I know, it’s hard to find. Jimminy Christmas – somebody Gantt chart this shit out and get me a Microsoft Project task list so i can get my sh** together. I don’t know why I blanked out one sh** but not the other shit. I think I’m trying to keep this blog family friendly.

We’re getting much less hits from the Demand Zombies in the forum, so it looks like things are settling down over there and we can get back to our original business – Demand Studios writing tips.

This is something that I figured out pretty quickly, but actually Demand even talks about it in one of their writers guides.

Overexplain the shit out of everything.

Ok, they probably didn’t say shit, but you get the point. From what I remember, one of their guides talks about writing the answer to the question, “When Did World War II End?”. Obviously, the answer is 1945 (for those of you who don’t believe in the Nazi UFO theory).  But Demand says that you should talk about why the war ended, how it ended, etc.

So you should do that with EVERY article. You never just “cut” something. You “use the scissors to apply a vertical slice to the material you are working with”. A switch is never “turned off”, it is “moved to the location directly perpendicular to the position that you originally found it in”, etc.

I just used etc. Demand says you should never do that. But I did.

Because I’m in charge.

At least over here.

  • What I love about this is how DS doesn’t want you to explain the obvious. So.. which is it?

“But everyone seems to forget she’d said she was quitting anyway, so firing her seemed moot. Probably made DS feel real good to flex those muscles, though.”

Yeah, and to send a warning message to the DS pod zombies of the consequences if any of them dare to step out of line and speak their truth.

Patrick, I think you’ve just written what may be the only “tip” possible. With CEs mangling stuff without an iota of consistency, what works with one is a “REJECT” to another.

The tip I would contribute is, “Do the best work you can, given the gargantuan constraints, and then sit back and wait for a CE to tell you your best is shit and needs rewriting.”

Over in DSLand, I just read Mommy’s thread (referenced somewhere else here) about some other thread called “Seriously” that got yanked by some anonymous mod that nobody seems to be able to find, like Oswald’s accomplice in the JFK assassination.

Apparently, this thread turned into an attack on certain community mods. And I gathered that the CE who dared to speak the truth about the CE job, Page1News, is history. But everyone seems to forget she’d said she was quitting anyway, so firing her seemed moot. Probably made DS feel real good to flex those muscles, though.

What I got don’t get is why these people get their knickers in a knot over this sort of shit. You’d think someone physically jumped the mods and hacked away big chunks of them with a butcher knife.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that they seem to think the forums are REAL. It’s scary.

And Mommy revealed some of her habits. Yes, she does feel personally responsible for reading EVERY post and stays glued to her computer at least 22 hours a day to make sure no one with an actual point to make feels welcome.

In trying to impose an extreme level of civility on the forums, she’s appointed herself absolute dictator. And DS seems to be just fine with that.

    Did I say it’s scary?

Forums. Definitely. Zombies. Definitely not. There’s a buddypress (part of wordpressMU) plug in for that.
