I apologize kids. I live in a part of the country where automobiles come standard with air conditioning. Summer here lasts 6 to 8 months. If the AC breaks down, it can be traumatic. Our central air went kaput the week before last. Actually, it started pissing on the floors first. We had a dog do that a couple of years ago. Natasha is now buried out back. The damned thing died before the repair man could even arrive. The AC of course, and I mean dead, bury it in the back dead. I’ll spare you the saga, but I have been relegated to 10 days of daytime indoor temperatures of 92 degrees and nights around 89. As they say, it ain’t the heat, it’s the humidity. We tried ice packs on the modem and router. That worked, and then my laptop decided it was a good time to disrespect me. Labor at home in those conditions? Or go somewhere else to cool my jets? I think you can guess what I did.
How to Bury Your Air Conditioner
Everything is back to normal. Our AC is pissing on the floor again. My laptop is cool and composed. Behind the DSS curtain, Patrick has gritted his teeth and begrudgingly cut me some slack. You think the DMS CEs are bad? They’ve got nothing on old Pat! The little work I did manage to accomplish in my skivvies at home last week was all devoted to paying the bills, slogging it out in the content mills.
I’m still looking for a way to “Unclaim” Patrick’s requests and then immediately turn back around and claim them. Hey it works on My Work Desk at DS. It’s not that I don’t want to help make this a better website. I just don’t want to sit around in my boxers with a quart of beer to my forehead in sweltering indoor heat, to do this for the pennies that Patrick has offered. Now that the AC is running again, I’m back to fishing coins out of the DSS fountain — but in the dehumidified comfort of an air-conditioned home, where I can blow a big fatty whenever I wish.
How to Hold a Joint
Ah … you get the picture.
All that was a long-winded way of saying I’m back, and DSS is better than ever. We have a plan in place to improve the site performance. It requires migrating everything to a different host. Fairly simple task if both old and new hosting providers are running cPanel. Except in our case. The DSS shituation is compounded by how shitty our current host actually is. Not at liberty to name names, but sounds like Blow Fatty. Did I mention that Patrick’s shoestring budget got us into this mess? Never fear! There are ways around this problem. Right now the process is scheduled for next weekend. So you Americans may have to do without your fix of DSS over Labor Day weekend. You shouldn’t be working anyway! That’s why they call it Labor Day, right? We’ll keep you posted on any scheduled downtime. I’ll be back to dissecting the Demand Media IPO next week, after the migration.
Please take some time to Vote in the latest DSS Poll. We intentionally left off a response about site availability or performance. Those two problems will be fixed shortly (fingers crossed). You can select either 1 or 2 responses to the ‘Site Changes Poll’. Polling will close on September 15. By then, we should be humming along and ready to start implementing some new features. Speaking of requests, if something that you’ve been itching for isn’t in our poll, just drop us a note in the comments, or in the forums, or by email. We really do value your input.
Well, it shouldn’t really be such a task, but it’s another thing to actually get the site migrated. This ain’t my first rodeo. Talk to me on the flipside, and I’ll let you know how it goes.
Sorry about that. Try the poll now, and you should be able to include a second choice. I would test it myself, but that would skew the results.

Yup, only one choice allowed on the poll. Decisions, decisions!

Your poll says select 2, but when I do, it tells me I can only make one choice? Are you sure DMS hasn’t infiltrated causing glitches over here?

If your website and forum content is mostly stored in your database (which it should be!), moving shouldn’t really be such a task?
