I just bought a Blu Ray player with some DS scratch.
Pretty awesome.
We don’t even have a HD tv! But it hooks up to the Internets.
Me & Mrs. DSS have been rocking out to some 80s MTV videos and Beavis & Butthead.
So lately I’ve been hearing of friends who are getting attacked by the CE’s. In most of the cases, my friends have decided that the rewrites aren’t worth it so they just abandon them.
Now, here’s the question part – what happens to the articles? Do they get resampled back into the content mill?
And here’s the theoretical part – what if you took that abandoned rewrite and took it over to some other content site? I know that’ll probably get you fired from Demand…but I guess they’d have to find out about it?
And the only way they could do that is by checking the title? Because the text of the article is gone – or is it?
If abandoned rewrites go into a hole and disappear forever so the title can be recycled, then are you actually doing anything wrong? It’s not a DS article until it’s approved, right?
I know they claim to own the titles of articles. I’ll leave that up to our official DSS International Law Expert to verify that claim.
So, the workflow here would be to take an abandoned rewrite. Tweak the title, then put it out on another content site.
Dunno. Just wondering aloud.
Here’s some Adam and the Ants to get you thinking….

I’ve sold abandoned and rejected DS articles many times. If they don’t pay for it, they don’t own any part of it. Just take it to Constant Content and you’ll probably make more than they would have paid for it anyway

Titles cannot be copyrighted. Many of DS’s titles are common phrases, such as “How To Get A Passport.” This phrase is seen all over the Internet, and Demand Media can’t do anything about it. A company can’t copyright everyday words and phrases. Even if Demand Media wanted to trademark common words and phrases, they would be denied. For abandoned or rejected articles, the author holds all rights to the property, unless stated within a contract. If you publish the article somewhere else, even if you don’t get paid, Demand Media could be sued for plagiarism if it tried to publish your work.

Reclaiming a title is one of those things “you’re not supposed to do” but people were doing all the time, so TPTB mentioned on the forums they were going to make it so you can’t. We’ll see though.

If you like the title, keep the title too. Titles can’t be copyrighted. DS is full of shit when they say they own the titles.

Actually, Julianne, I’m pretty sure that I could see a title that I abandoned a few days ago. I don’t know if it was a glitch but it was definitely a title that I had abandoned… or, it may have been a reject.

If you abandon an article, you still own the content and can do with it as you please. Unlike rejected articles, the information isn’t saved on the DS server forever, so if you want to re-purpose the article, do it quickly!
The title this is up for debate on the forums regularly.
As for what happens to the actual title, if it’s abandoned, it goes back to the pool within a few days. I know people used to reclaim the title and rewrite the thing hoping for a better CE, but I think that you no longer can see a title you abandon.

If the article is abandoned or rejected, you can do with it what you want. The article is not purchased and therefore you still have the rights to the article. As far as the title goes, who knows for sure, but in all honesty how difficult is it to rework a title?
Bottom line, until the article is accepted it is still yours to do with it what you want.
