Richard and I have been mostly out of commission, so I’ve gone in and updated the content here in lieu of a new blog entry, and reposting it. Gotta practice what I preach, and if I can’t repurpose my own content whose can I? There’s some new stuff in here. Comments are all gone. Make some new ones.
How To Bitch Properly
I mean, I can’t really complain. Demand Media Studios has helped me out of more than one tight spot. I’ve earned some pretty good money while I worked for them. Or still work for them. Or will be continuing to work for them until they eventually find me out and fire me.
It’s really improved my writing. Mostly because I’ve been doing so much g***med much of it.
But, as I detailed in an earlier post, I saw an opportunity and took it.
If I registered the domain name: demandstudiosisgreatandihavesunshinecomingoutofmybutt.com, I don’t think this site would have gained half the attention that it has received nor fostered the community that it has built.
That, unfortunately, is the nature of the Interwebs. Things that suck are generally funnier and generate more traffic than things that don’t suck.
The main thing that sucks about Demand is the utter lack of freedom of speech in their private forums. Which is fine. It’s their forums. They can control what goes on there.
Just because people bitch about things doesn’t mean they hate them. Hell, bitching is in our blood! What do you think Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson and all those other cats were doing back in 1776? They were BITCHING.
Is the Demand system perfect? No. But could you get away with saying that in the Demand Studios Forums? Not on your life.
Did Demand really think they were going to hire thousands of WRITERS and not have someone start up a blog eventually? Really? A recent discussion in the forums has me reflecting on the purpose of this site. Our own disCONTENTed did an excellent job explaining the solace that we find here. Despite what the zombies claim, DSS is not a forum exclusively to bitch. It is an alternate reality, but who doesn’t need more of those. What are books, television, movies and video games, eh?
Hopefully, Demand will see some of the comments here and maybe even change the system just a little bit. Get less crappy stock photos for one. I didn’t think it would be possible, but the recent change in stock photo providers actually seems to been a change for the worse. Maybe, perhaps, pay a little bit more? Set higher standards for hiring? Consolidate some of the formats? Train the CEs better? What else do you think would improve the work?
(PS: Just to let everyone know, I’m all about the greenbacks. If I were to be offered some kind of “Director of Bitching About Things That Suck at Demand Media Moderator” job from Demand, I’d strongly consider it. Seems unlikely, so we’re probably not going anywhere soon.)
So, if nothing else, as I’ve always said, I wanted to start a blog where people could come and be able to talk. Where are all the Demand Lovers out there? I’m not censoring any comments.
