Been doing some more research on this.

Basically, we're not the only forum using phpBB to have seen a massive influx of spam over the past week. Depending upon who you believe, the captcha system may have been cracked, so it's easy for spammers to register new users with a bot and not a human.

I think we'll have to create a poll for this. For now, if you care, weigh in under the Website Suggestions - Official Antispam discussion thread:
